8 Best Hair Loss & Growth Vitamins/Supplements (2020 Guide)

8 Best Hair Loss & Growth Supplements (2020 Guide)

Are you trying to stop your hair loss? Or you only want to grow out your hair faster?

Well – the best thing you can use are vitamins:

  • quickest effect of all hair products
  • results last much longer
  • lower prices (compared to topical products)

So if there’s a category of hair products I would recommend – it’s surely supplements.

But which one should you choose?

Here’s a list of the 8 best hair loss & growth vitamins/supplements in 2020 (for both men & women).

Note: These recommendations are based on my own experience + research on these products.

Best 7 Hair Loss & Growth Vitamins/Supplements

  1. Folexin Best effect and lowest price.
  2. Nuzena Hair Growth Formula Best for paying in monthly installments.
  3. Profollica Best for male pattern hair loss (DHT blocker).
  4. Procerin – Best cheap DHT blocker.
  5. Follixin Best for international buyers (non-US).
  6. Viviscal Best product with clinical studies behind.
  7. Nutrafol Best for people looking for a strong brand.
  8. Puri Hair Best for testing new products out.

#1 Recommendation – Folexin ($24.95)

This is by far the best vitamin mix for hair loss & growth I used:

  • strongest formula overall (about 30 different ingredients)
  • faster effect than in most supplements
  • works for both men and women
  • cheapest supplements that works so well

Basically – it has more good points than any other product.

However, there’s a major reason why it’s my top recommendation – price.

Folexin is THE CHEAPEST VITAMIN that really worked for me.

It’s surely not the only one. But considering the others cost over $40, I think Folexin is a much better choice:

  • decreased my hair loss completely in 2 months
  • made my hair grow almost 3x faster
  • improved my thinning
8 Best Hair Loss & Growth Vitamins (2020 Guide)
A quick summary of my experience with this supplement: the change in my hair in 6 months.

So at this point – it’s the very best hair supplement I know. That’s why it’s the product I’m constantly using.

Price Tip: You can get Folexin for $18 instead of $24. Get a 5 bottles pack using the code FIVE$61404893 and you will get 1 bottle off, $35 discount and $18 per bottle.

That’s the tip I use and save a significant amount of money.

1. Ingredients (10 out of 10)

1. Herbal Extracts (Saw Palmetto, Nettle, Horsetail, Fo-Ti, Bamboo, Peony, Spirulina, PABA, Plant Sterols, Barley Grass, etc.)

2. Vitamins (Biotin, Vitamin A, B complex, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3, E)

3. Minerals (Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Zinc, Manganese, Potassium)

2. How It Works (9.90 out of 10)

It’s probably the only product I rated so high:

As I said – I consider it the best choice in terms of hair vitamins at this point.

3. Best For

1. Female hair loss caused by most problems (DHT excess, excessive stress, damage, nutritional deficiencies, etc.).

It’s also effective for growing hair that is already healthy.

2. Male hair loss caused by stress or poor nutrition.

I wouldn’t recommend it for male hair loss caused by DHT excess (only in minor cases).

It could help, but I would suggest using a supplement designed to block DHT (Folexin is quite general).

PROs
  • One of the best formulas on the market
  • About 30 different ingredients (all with studies behind)
  • Effective for most causes of hair loss
  • Can increase hair growth speed up to 3 times
  • Works for both men and women
  • Helpful for thickening and reducing breakage
  • Best price among all hair supplements
CONs
  • Few authentic reviews for real users (most are promotional)
  • Also available on Amazon but the price is much higher
  • Doesn’t ship to every country
  • Shipping fees are about $4 (US) and $15 (internationally)
  • Does not regrow hair on a bald scalp
  • Other products also have the exact same formula (but they’re way pricier)

#2 – Nuzena Hair Growth Support ($35)

Nuzena’s product is an excellent choice anytime.

Despite being rated the #2 – it has about the same features as my top recommendation (Folexin):

  • exact same powerful formula
  • really good dosages
  • works for both men and women
  • results last on the long term (even if you give up the pills)

Basically, in terms of ingredients – it’s similar to Folexin.

However, Nuzena’s supplement costs $10 more – which is why it’s not rated higher.

But speaking of money, this company has a unique pricing.

They allow you to pay in 4 monthly installments, which is honestly great. So as for this supplement:

  • you can get it by paying $8.75 per month
  • you will pay this amount for 4 months

It doesn’t sound so pricey anymore, does it?

Nuzena is the only supplement company offering this payment – and it surely has a great advantage here.

1. Ingredients (9.90 out of 10)

They’re exactly the same as in the previous supplement (my #1 recommendation).

1. Herbal Extracts (Saw Palmetto, Nettle, Horsetail, Fo-Ti, Bamboo, Peony, Spirulina, PABA, Plant Sterols, Barley Grass, etc.)

2. Vitamins (Biotin, Vitamin A, B complex, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3, E)

3. Minerals (Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Zinc, Manganese, Potassium)

2. How It Works (9.50 out of 10)

Since it has the same formula, it’s quite obvious that it works just as well.

I have used Nuzena’s supplement myself and in terms of effect – there’s nothing I could complain about:

  • effective against hair loss and thinning
  • starts working in the first 3 months
  • also boosts hair growth
3. Best For

This supplement works best for the same problems as Folexin:

  • any kind of hair loss in women
  • hair loss caused by stress and deficiencies in men
  • growing out hair faster

However – I would recommend Nuzena’s product to people who prefer paying in monthly installments.

This product is pricier than Folexin, but it has a more flexible payment system.

So if monthly installments are easier to pay for you, I recommend Nuzena over Folexin.

PROs
  • Really strong and quality formula
  • Varied ingredients in high dosages
  • Effective for most causes of hair loss (especially in women)
  • You can see results in a few months
  • Possibility to pay in 4 monthly installments (really affordable)
  • Ships to any country
CONs
  • Company is pretty new so it has few opinions/reviews
  • US shipping costs $4.95
  • International shipping costs around $15
  • Only available on its official website
  • Doesn’t work for male baldness

#3 – Profollica ($59.95)

This is my #1 recommended product for male pattern hair loss.

Actually – it’s 2 products (because one kit contains 2 products).

So if you’re a male dealing with shedding/thinning due to DHT excess – Profollica is the best choice:

  • specially designed for male hair loss
  • strong formula in both products
  • one of the few products with studies behind

Now – Profollica isn’t FDA approved (like Minoxidil or Finasteride).

But it has a major advantage over these 2.

It can be stopped anytime without causing reverse hair loss (as Minoxidil/Finasteride do).

Plus – it has very few side effects, unlike both of the other products.

  • Profollica includes a supplement and a gel.
  • You can only buy them together.

So even though it doesn’t seem very cheap – its price is actually for 2 products.

That’s why $30/product seems really affordable (for a DHT blocker).

1. Ingredients (9 out of 10)

Both products have an excellent formula:

1. Trichogen™

2. Herbal Extracts (Panax Ginseng, Arcticum Majus Root, Cinamommun Zeylandicum Bark, Kigelia Africana, etc.)

3. Vitamins/Minerals (Niacin, Folic Acid, PABA, Zinc Oxide, Vitamin B6, Zinc, Magnesium, Calcium, etc.)

2. How It Works (8 out of 10)

Profollica’s 2 products kit works in 2 main steps:

  1. Decreases and normalizes DHT levels (supplement).
  2. Reduces hair loss and thinning (activator gel).

Also – it claims to work in 60 days with visible results.

If that’s not the case, the producer offers a full refund to all customers (which is great, honestly).

3. Best For

1. Male hair loss caused by DHT excess (hormonal imbalances).

This is the main cause of shedding in men (about 80% cases in men over 40).

2. Androgenetic alopecia in women (bald patches or thinning).

However, this condition is pretty rare in women.

So Profollica isn’t really recommended for hair loss in women (this is usually a general hair loss – unlike in men).

PROs
  • Really strong ingredients in high dosages
  • 2 products offered in one kit
  • Really effective against male pattern hair loss/thinning
  • Decent price ($60 for 2 products)
  • You can also get one kit for $50 (when buying larger quantities)
  • Many positive reviews online
  • 60 days money back guarantee
CONs
  • Mostly effective for male pattern hair loss
  • You can’t get the 2 products separately
  • Mostly available on its official website

#4 – Procerin ($26.95)

This is another excellent product for male hair loss.

That’s because of its unique formula:

  • based on Saw Palmetto (best natural DHT blocker)
  • strong ingredients in high dosages
  • quite popular

For this reason – it’s a cheaper alternative to my previously recommended product for male baldness (Profollica).

That’s because Procerin has its own advantages:

  • more natural (herbal) formula
  • lower price than most DHT blockers
  • offers 2 products that can be bought separately

Besides – it doesn’t have to be used for the rest of your life.

So if you decide to give it up at one point, your hair won’t start falling out massively again.

As I said – Procerin offers 2 products:

  • there’s a supplement and a foam
  • however, it’s the supplement that does most of the job

So if you can’t afford buying both – buy only the supplement, as it’s much stronger.

1. Ingredients (9 out of 10)

For a DHT blocker, it has an excellent formula.

1. Saw Palmetto Berry Complex

2. Other Herbal Extracts (Eleuthero, Gotu Kola, Muira Puama, Nettles, Pumpkin, Uva Ursi)

3. Vitamins/Minerals (Vitamin B6, Zinc, Magnesium, Calcium)

2. How It Works (8 out of 10)

Though it doesn’t work for all customers – more than 50% are satisfied:

  • decreases male pattern hair loss/thinning
  • stops receding hairline
  • delays baldness in genetic cases

However, most users claim it doesn’t grow new hairs in bald men (which is quite obvious).

3. Best For

1. Male hair loss caused by DHT excess – this can include:

  • bald spots
  • receding hairline
  • general thinning

2. Androgenetic alopecia in women (but this is quite rare).

See My Full Review Here

PROs
  • Strong compounds and high dosages
  • Formula based on Saw Palmetto (best natural DHT blocker)
  • Powerful effect against male pattern hair loss/thinning
  • Also comes as a foam (not just pills)
  • Low price compared to its competitors
  • Many positive reviews online
  • 90 days money back guarantee
CONs
  • Mostly effective for male pattern hair loss
  • Doesn’t grow new hairs in bald men
  • Not effective for everyone
  • Pills are a bit thick (compared to others)

#5 – Follixin ($49)

Based on my personal experience with it – Follixin was one of the most effective hair supplements I ever tried:

  • reduced my fall out in 1-2 months
  • made my hair look a lot thicker
  • increased its growth speed

Even though it’s mostly advertised for male hair loss – it works really well for both genders.

I’m the best proof, actually.

So why isn’t Follixin higher on my list?

  1. Not such a great formula as the others.
  2. More expensive overall.
  3. Pricing system is a bit frustrating.

But in terms of effectiveness – it’s an excellent supplement.

Some reviews claim it can also help with growing new hairs (on affected scalps) – but I can’t 100% guarantee for that.

But overall, I definitely recommend the product.

1. Ingredients (9 out of 10)

They’re pretty good overall.

1. Herbs + Proteins (Horsetail, Nettle, Hydrolyzed Collagen, L-Cysteine)

2. Vitamins/Minerals (Vitamin C, B Complex, E, Niacin, Biotin, Zinc, Cooper, etc.)

2. How It Works (9 out of 10)

I personally had great results with Follixin:

  • results were visible from the first month
  • speeds up hair growth rate

According to some reviews, many people see an effect in the first 3 weeks.

Others need a few months to see a change, but that’s still a decent period.

3. Best For

1. General hair loss in both men and women

It has the right ingredients to stop the shedding and improve any deficiency.

2. Faster hair growth (especially in women)

Though Follixin is promoted as a male supplement, its formula isn’t designed for male hair loss:

  • no DHT blocker
  • no unusual ingredients

However – I recommend it for people who need international shipping (it costs $25).

If you’re from the US, you would have to pay the same for shipping – which is really not worth it.

See My Full Review Here

PROs
  • Really fast effect in many people (sometimes even one month)
  • Works for both men and women
  • Many positive reviews online
  • Pills are small and really easy to swallow
  • Ships in any country
CONs
  • Shipping fees are really high ($25 for any country, including US)
  • Pretty high price per bottle

#6 – Viviscal ($49.99)

At this point, this is one of the most popular hair supplements on the market.

And in terms of effect – it’s worth the popularity:

  • really good ingredients inside (mostly one)
  • one of the few supplements with studies behind
  • effective pretty fast (2 months)

But obviously, its popularity and clinical evidence come with a cost.

At $50 per monthly supply, Viviscal is extremely expensive (for my budget at least).

That’s the main reason why it’s not higher on my list.

I just don’t think it’s worth all these money when there are cheaper alternatives that work just as well.

But other than that – Viviscal is an excellent product (in terms of features).

1. Ingredients (8.50 out of 10)

It contains a substance you can’t find in other products (Amino Mar).

1. Herbal Extracts (Horsetail, Millet Seed)

2. Vitamins/Minerals (Vitamin C, Niacin, Biotin, Calcium, Iron, Zinc)

2. How It Works (9 out of 10)

Viviscal seems to be effective for both men and women:

  • decreases shedding
  • strengthens hair roots and ends
  • increases growth speed

In my case – the hair didn’t seem to grow a lot more while I was on Viviscal.

But many reviews claim it helps with growth, so I was surely an exception.

3. Best For

1. Thicker and fuller hair (that’s what it’s designed for).

2. General hair growth, especially in women with healthy hair (though it works for shedding as well).

But overall – it’s not a supplement designed for male baldness or thinning.

Men can use it too, but mostly to grow or keep their hair in a good shape (not for an early baldness).

See My Full Review Here

PROs
  • Several clinical trials conducted on it
  • Formula contains an unique ingredient (Amino Mar)
  • Works pretty good for general hair loss
  • Increasing popularity
  • Many positive reviews online
CONs
  • Pretty high price overall
  • Ingredients aren’t amazing (except for Amino Mar)
  • Doesn’t work for male baldness

#7 – Nutrafol ($88)

This product is competing with Viviscal when it comes to popularity.

They both have 2 strong brands behind, clinical evidence and many satisfied users.

So what makes Nutrafol so special?

  • really good formula (better than Viviscal)
  • several versions available, depending on your problem
  • great effect overall

I personally used Nutrafol and I was very happy with the results.

But as you might expect, there’s a major reason why it’s only my 6th recommendation – PRICE.

At $88 per bottle, it’s extremely hard to afford by most of us.

So I personally would never recommend such a pricey product as my top choice.

1. Ingredients (9.90 out of 10)

It has an excellent formula behind:

1. Nutrafol Blend (Horsetail, Bioperine, Capsimax, Cysteine, Lysine, etc.)

2. Synergen Complex (Saw Palmetto, Marine Collagen, BCM-95 Curcumin, etc.)

3. Vitamins/Minerals (Vitamin A, C, D, Zinc, Selenium, etc.)

2. How It Works (9 out of 10)

My personal results with Nutrafol were great:

  • decreased my fall out almost completely
  • pretty fast effect
  • also made my hair grow faster

So speaking exclusively about its effect – it’s an awesome product.

3. Best For

People on a high budget who want a famous brand product (instead of a cheaper one that does the same thing).

Nutrafol works really well for issues like:

1. General hair loss in men and women

2. Growing hair faster and stronger

As you might guess – it’s not a baldness remedy, so it’s not going to help with that.

See My Full Review Here

PROs
  • One of the best formulas I have ever seen in a hair product
  • High dosages in most ingredients
  • A lot of positive reviews online
  • Works pretty fast (less than 3 months)
  • 3 different versions available (male, female, female over 50)
  • You can get it cheaper with auto-shipping ($79 per bottle on its official website)
CONs
  • Extremely expensive and overpriced
  • Hard to afford on a constant basis
  • You need to take 4 pills a day

#8 – Puri Hair ($39.99)

Here’s another less popular supplement that can make wonders for your hair.

In case you never heard of Puri Hair, you should check it out:

  • quality formula and ingredients
  • good price (if you buy more than 2 bottles at once)

However, despite having a good effect for hair growth – it’s far from a perfect supplement.

It’s quite unknown and expensive if you only want to test it out (and buy only 1 bottle).

That’s why it’s my last recommendation.

But as I said – in terms of effect, it’s surely a quality product. A lot more quality than it seems.

1. Ingredients (9 out of 10)

1. Vitamins/Minerals (Folic Acid, Zinc, Iron, Biotin, Riboflavin, etc.)

2. Proprietary Blend (Citrus Biflavonoids, PABA, Rutin, Inositol)

2. How It Works (9 out of 10)

My results with Puri Hair were impressively good:

  • hair looked thicker and had more volume
  • shedding reduced in 2 months
  • hair ends were less fragile
  • hair was growing faster overall

So I was pretty satisfied with how these pills worked for my body.

3. Best For

Though it’s not really the best first choice – Puri Hair can help for:

1. Female hair loss (not necessarily hormonal imbalances)

2. Faster hair growth and strengthening

It’s not a supplement I would recommend for male hair loss – due to its formula.

See My Full Review Here

PROs
  • Varied ingredients in high dosages
  • Works for both shedding and hair growth
  • Effect appears pretty fast
CONs
  • High price per bottle
  • Only ships in the US
  • You need to take 3 pills per day
  • Very few customer info/reviews online

My Verdict – What’s The Best Hair Vitamin?

Short answer: At this point – it’s surely Folexin:

  • best formula and ingredients overall (about 30 compounds)
  • lowest price among all quality supplements
  • really fast effect (1-2 months)
  • extremely helpful in my case

So if there’s a vitamin I would recommend you, it’s surely this one.

That’s the reason why it’s my #1 pick.

Now – all supplements from this list were extremely effective for my hair.

So no matter which you chose, you should still see a big improvement.

But there are major differences between them in other chapters than effect:

  1. Price (most are $40 or above)
  2. Number of pills required daily
  3. Whether they work for both genders or not

So basically – putting all info together, Folexin gets the highest grades in most chapters.

That’s why it’s my favorite supplement for hair loss and growth.

It does the same thing as the rest (it actually works a bit better) and costs at least $15 less.

For this reason – at this point, I consider it the best hair supplement you can buy.

That’s why it’s the product I’ve been using constantly for a long while now.

And I don’t plan to switch to something else too soon.

  1. Hi, Olly.
Thanks for sharing the list of best hair loss and growth supplements. After going through all the reviews I could sense that Your suggestion for Nuzena is the best, just because of the payment plan and all the benefits which Folexin offers. As the supplement is to be taken on a daily basis so why to park money for four months once it can be divided into four payments.
I am bookmarking this page and will surely go for Nuzena. Thanks for helping me to decide on the right product.
    Warm Regards,
    Gaurav Gaur

    1. Hey Gaurav, thanks for sharing your opinion.

I would actually put Nuzena on the same scale as Folexin – given that they have the exact same formula. I personally use Folexin, because it’s cheaper overall (I buy the 5 months pack so that’s about $18 per bottle, a price no supplement can beat).

Nuzena is better in terms of payment options, that’s where it has an advantage over Folexin. If you’re a first time customer and you can’t afford paying the full price, monthly installments are a great choice. Unfortunately very few supplement brands offer this alternative, that’s why Nuzena has an advantage.

But if you buy its largest pack (7 months supply), you end up paying $20 per bottle. That’s an excellent price but it’s $2 pricier than Folexin. So that’s why I personally prefer Folexin. Still – if you prefer paying in monthly installments, Nuzena is a way better choice. You can also pay the 7 months supply in installments, which is even more convenient.

So between these 2 supplements, it’s all about the payment preference. I hope this helps!

  2. Thank you for sharing non-advertisement information about these hair supplements. I was looking for info that wasn’t biased. I never thought I would be seeking help with my hair since it’s been overly thick most of my life. But this year it started shedding daily and is getting noticeably thinner, probably due to hormones since I’m 47. Have you ever heard anything about Reserveage Tres Beauty 3? I got it at Whole Foods before reading your reviews. I have very cystic acne so it’s very hard for me to find vitamins that don’t make the problem worse so which one would be the least harmful for my skin? I think I will also try Folexin.

    1. Hey Kady. I just checked the product you mentioned and I would say it’s suitable for your body. When it comes to people with acne, I always recommend choosing a product with a minimal dose of biotin – because this ingredient causes acne and breakouts very often in high doses. Reserveage’s supplement contains 300 mg, which is an average dose (anything under 1000 mg is fine). So from this point of view, it shouldn’t worsen or even affect your acne.

I can’t really tell how effective this product is going to be for your hair, but its formula doesn’t look bad at all. Just make sure to take it for 2-3 months if you want to see its real results. The supplement isn’t very affordable, so hopefully you can afford it on the long term. Please keep me updated on how it goes!

  3. I used to use Viviscal with great results. Target sells it below the $50 price tag ($33.99). I quit due to expense and because it contains shark cartilage. I plan on ordering Folexin today. The ingredient list and cheap price is impressive.

    1. Hi Dianne, thanks for the feedback. It’s great to hear Viviscal is available for a few dollars less, but $34 is still quite pricey on the long term. So that’s why I see Folexin as a better choice in terms of quality/price. A few months after you start using it, please let me know how it goes. Hope this helps!

  4. Greetings Olly,
I’m an old school metal head and I got the, I would say, typical ageing problems with my hair. But I do like my hair and would have it this way as long as possible.
I tried Hair Surge – you reviewed it – for almost 10 months with no to negative effects.
So I have to try other products and so I found your website.
I would have tried Folexin, but it’s not available in Germany. I looked into Nuzena and Follixin, and I think the latter will be my choice. There are no shipping costs and buying a larger pack reduces the cost to about $27 a month ( – half the price of a single pack). This sounds reasonable.
So thank you for your reviews. Those are much appreciated and I will stick to this page for the foreseeing future.

    1. Hi Michael, thanks a lot for your opinion. I’m sorry to hear Hair Surge didn’t work for you, if you read my review you probably know it’s not a product I recommend (mostly because it’s a shampoo, it’s pricey and it’s quite hard to use).

Now, if your hair issues are more related to male pattern thinning/shedding, I wouldn’t recommend Folexin (it works better for general hair loss/thinning). Instead, Follixin is also designed for that kind of problem, so I would say it would suit your needs better. And yes, you’re right, price is much better for it when it comes to buying it internationally. So if you decide to give it a try, let me know how it works, I would love to hear your feedback.

PS: If your hair loss is rather general, then any of the 3 supplements you mentioned would do, but Follixin remains more suitable because of the country you live in.

  5. Hi there,

I am 48 and I have been struggling with hair loss on and off over the last 20 years. This time I think it is because of a diet that is to strict, so I may miss out on some vitamins I guess. I am interested in product number 1, because seeing the pictures of your hair over the months, the difference it makes, makes me go: ‘wow’ ! I want that 🙂

I will surely bookmark this post, it will help me with the right choice for my hair.

    1. Hi Lizzy, thanks a lot for your opinion. I actually think Folexin is the most suitable for you, because it’s designed for general hair loss in women (which you probably have, judging after your symptoms). Since you’re almost in your 50s, your hair loss could also be worsened by hormonal imbalances and menopause. But as you’ve been fighting it for a long while, that’s pretty unlikely.

Now, Folexin is also way more affordable than most quality products I know, so it’s better for the long term (especially if you don’t want a product made by a famous brand – like Viviscal or Nutrafol).

If you decide to try it at one point, let me know how it goes.
