Lightening Hair Dyed Too Dark (3 Different Ways)

Lightening Hair Dyed Too Dark (3 Different Ways)

Are you interested in lightening hair dyed too dark? Or do you simply want to lighten your dark hair – naturally?

Either way, you’re in the right place.

I’m going to show you 3 different methods do lighten your hair:

  • without any hair dye or chemicals
  • using natural ingredients

Look – hair dye damages hair really badly. I say this from my own experience. That’s why I’m trying to avoid it – as much as possible.

What To Expect

Now – there’s one thing I want to point out from the start.

These 3 methods that I’m about to show you aren’t miraculous – like hair dye is:

  • you won’t see a huge difference instantly
  • you may have to repeat it several times
  • in the end, you may not even get the very light shade you wanted
  • but on the long term, it’s a lot healthier

So did I convince you? I say you should give (at least) one of these methods a try.

Method #1 – Lemon Juice

Among all these 3 techniques – this is probably the best one:

  • it works faster than the rest
  • you should notice a color change from the first tries

Overall – lemon juice is probably the most famous ingredient for lightening hair. Among the natural ones, I mean.

That’s because of one class of substances it contains – citric acids.

So here’s what you should do:

  1. Mix a glass of fresh lemon juice with half a glass of water
  2. In case you want to obtain a lighter (and faster) color, you can try to apply the lemon juice without diluting it with water
  3. Add some conditioner – because the acids inside the lemon juice could dry out your hair
  4. Mix all the ingredients together until they look very smooth
  5. Apply the mixture on your hair – especially on the roots
  6. Sit in the sun. Lemon juice works better when exposed to sun rays
  7. Let it sit for at least half and hour – then rinse your hair well

Depending on how dark your hair is – you should see a change from the first try.

Now – chances are that you won’t get the light shade you wanted.

But don’t worry – you can repeat this method every 2-3 days and the color should get lighter and lighter.

However, I don’t recommend repeating it more often than this:

  • citric acids inside lemon juice dehydrate hair
  • so it may affect its strength on the long term
  • conditioner will help – but prevention is even better

Method #2 – Cinnamon

This method is the best one at one chapter – removing natural highlights.

So here’s when you can use it:

  • your hair roots and ends have visibly different colors
  • your hair was sun exposed and it doesn’t look even

Now – compared to lemon juice, cinnamon isn’t as strong. It doesn’t contain any acid – so it won’t change your hair color that fast.

But if you use it correctly and you have patience, you should notice a lighter hair color after a while.

So here’s what you should do:

  1. Mix cinnamon powder with a bit of water – until it becomes more liquid (like a paste)
  2. Only apply the mixture on the strands you want to lighten – probably ends
  3. If possible, leave it overnight. Cinnamon needs more time to work
  4. If not, you should let it sit at least 2-3 hours
  5. Rinse deeply – because the mixture is thick and quite sticky
  6. Let your hair dry naturally

As I said – you might not see a change from the first time. It all depends on what shade your hair is.

But the good news is that cinnamon isn’t that harmful as lemon juice. So you can use this method everyday if you want.

At one point, you have to get the exact light shade you’ve been dreaming for. You only need some patience.

Method #3 – Honey

Everyone knows honey and its benefits for hair – in general:

  • it moisturizes and nourishes damaged hair
  • it can help hair growth
  • and last but not least – it seems to lighten hair as well

How come? Well – do you know oxygenated water? It’s great for lightening hair, skin and everything.

Well, honey contains a similar compound – benzoyl peroxide. So now it’s pretty clear what it can do – right?

So here’s what you should do:

  1. Add some water to a bowl of honey – until it gets liquid enough to apply it
  2. You should apply it all over your hair (or where you want a lighter shade)
  3. Let it sit for at least 5-6 hours
  4. If you can, you should let it sit overnight – that’s the best
  5. Rinse carefully, because honey is hard to remove

In the end – you will probably not see an change from the first.

Honey is far as strong as lemon juice. In fact, it’s not even as strong as cinnamon.

But in some cases, it’s the best recommendation for lightening hair:

  • you have dry or dehydrated roots
  • your hair is falling out massively
  • you also need a hair growth mask

If you’re in one of these cases – I recommend you to use honey for lightening. It won’t work that fast, but it will serve for multiple purposes.

At least that’s what I would choose in this case.

My Verdict – What Should You Use?

Short answer: It depends on what exactly you want – and of what your hair needs. You can also combine 2 or all 3 methods.

But here are a few factors you should consider:

  • how healthy is your hair
  • what shade you want to get in the end
  • what part of your hair you want to lighten
  • how fast you want to see results

Now – if you have straight hair and you need a quick effect, I would recommend lemon juice.

It’s the strongest method – but it can also dehydrate your hair most (compared to hair dye – it’s 100% safer).

On the other hand, if your hair is very damaged, falling out or simply in a bad condition – I would recommend honey:

  • It won’t be too quick
  • But it will also repair your hair

And last but not least – if you only want to lighten one part of your hair, cinnamon is probably the best one.

So it’s up to you what you choose – only be patient and repeat the method until you get the result you wanted.

Now I would like to hear from you:

  • Which of these 3 methods would you use?
  • Have you ever dyed your hair?
  • If yes – did the hair dye damage it badly?

I’m waiting for your answers, questions or suggestions in the comment section from below.
