How To Stop Thinning Hair In Women (In 8 Steps)

Did your hair start to get thinner recently? You’re not the only one.

According to studies – 50% of women deal with hair thinning at one point. But what can you do about it?

Well, you’re in the perfect place – here’s how to stop thinning hair in women following just 8 steps. Don’t worry, each of them is pretty simple.

#1. Find The Major Cause

Now – hair thinning is an aesthetic problem, right? That’s what bothers you most.

But the thing is – it could actually be a symptom of a health problem. So what affection could make your thinner?:

  • hormonal imbalances
  • anemia
  • thyroid problems
  • male hormones excess

Now – I will net get into any details here. But if you suspect you could have one of these problems (even in an initial stage) try to see a doctor immediately.

Another possible cause is genetics. If someone from your family had this problem, this could be the real cause.

However, you may not have found the cause on this list. In this case – there are some other possible causes:

  • stress
  • dandruff
  • even a busy lifestyle

The good news? All of them can be treated sooner or later.

#2. Start A Special Treatment

Fortunately – there are thousands of products designed for thin hair right now. And some of them really work.

Now – I do recommend you to follow this step if:

  • your hair is also falling out (massively)
  • it’s thinner at the ends
  • it also breaks easier than before

So basically – this kind of treatments work better for hair that is thinning due to hair loss.

That’s because they actually treat the hair loss – and fortify your hair additionally.

Therefore:

  • if your hair is simply thinning
  • and it’s not falling out

Then this kind of treatments will probably not do much for you.

So if that’s your case, I recommend you to skip this step. There’s no point spending extra money on something that isn’t going to help.

#3.  Try Some Supplements

Here’s the thing:

  • your hair might lack a certain nutrient
  • a low level in a certain mineral could affect its structure

Obviously, first you have to spot a certain deficiency. But once you find it, the right supplement could help your hair within weeks.

So what kind of supplements could be helpful? Mostly vitamins:

  • Biotin
  • Vitamin B7 (or a B complex)
  • Vitamin C
  • Iron

Now – I don’t recommend you to take one of these supplements randomly.

However – my advice is to choose a supplement that contains all of them.

Here’s my #1 recommended hair supplement:

#4.  Add Extra Stuff To Your Diet

When it comes to thinning hair:

  • It’s not about what you eat
  • It’s actually about what you don’t eat

Now – even though it sounds surprising, your eating habits have a lot to do with your hair’s condition.

As I said before, a low level of certain vitamins can affect your hair on the long term – leading to hair loss or thinning.

So before you buy any supplement – try to add some new foods to your diet:

  • green fruits and vegetables
  • citrus fruits
  • beetroots
  • organic eggs

These are all easy to find, tasty and they can also improve your general health.

If you add some healthy foods to your diet for about a month – you eventual deficiencies can even go away completely.

#5. Try A Volumizing Shampoo

If you want a fast solution – volumizing products are the best thing.

They are actually recommended for thinning hair – here’s why:

  • the substances inside harden your hair
  • so it looks a lot thicker
  • also, it has a lot more volume than before

It’s something similar to what hairspray does.

Now – the best thing about volumizing shampoos is that they work instantly. So you don’t have to wait for a month just to see a small improvement.

Besides – they don’t damage the hair, as hairspray does. But that’s as long as you use only the shampoo.

#6. Cut Off Styling Tools

This step probably doesn’t come as a surprise:

  • excessive heat damages healthy hair
  • so their effect is even worse on thinning hair

So the best thing you can do is to avoid styling tools – as much as you can.

If you work in an office and you need to have bouncy curls all the time:

  • use a protection spray on your hair
  • choose the lowest level of heat on your iron
  • use a professional tool
  • try hair rollers
  • keep your hair hydrated with hair masks

Now – these solutions are better than nothing. But they’re still not going to help as much as avoiding heat completely.

So it’s up to you what choice you make.

#7. Try To Reduce Stress

The thing is – stress is a real part of our lives. We may not feel it, but our body does.

Whether it’s because of your job, family matters or even health – stress can have a big impact on your hair.

Here’s what I mean:

  • it slows down hair growth
  • can affect hair follicles temporary
  • causes hair thinning – starting from the ends

So what exactly can you do about it – since you don’t feel like you’re stressed?

Basically – anything that makes you happy:

  • going out or having dinner with friends
  • exercising
  • spending time with your family
  • and the list can go on forever

So try to make time for an activity you enjoy after your daily schedule – and you might see an improvement in your hair as well.

#8. Get A Darker Hair Color

Let me give you a tip:

  • darker hair looks thicker and with more volume
  • light hair tends to seem thinner normally

It’s all about the colors actually.

Now – obviously that’s not available for everyone. But in most cases, that’s how things go.

So in case you have a light shade – go for a darker color, if you’re willing to change your look. Normally – it should make your hair look thicker, even if it’s not.

The good news is that you don’t have to use hair dye:

So Can You Stop Thinning Hair?

Short answer: Normally, yes. But it’s essential to find the real cause behind.

Once you do this, you can start fighting against hair thinning – using:

  • volumizing shampoos
  • a change in your diet
  • a darker hair color
  • supplements
  • special treatments
  • cutting off heating tools and stress

So the first thing you need to do right now is to find what’s making your hair go thinner.

Try to see a doctor, request a blood test and consider all the health problems you’ve had in the past.

Who knows, maybe the cause is something really easy to solve.

Now I would like to hear from you:

  • When did your hair start to get thinner?
  • Are you using any special products?
  • Do you have any health problems that could be responsible?

I’m waiting for your comments and suggestions in the lines below.

  1. Your style is so unique in comparison to other folks I’ve read stuff
from. Many thanks for posting when you’ve got the opportunity,
Guess I will just bookmark this blog.

  2. I have been taking Synthroid for years. I used to have thick hair. It’s really thinning now. Will anything work while taking this medication? Thank you

    1. Hi Faith, thyroid problems are a very common cause of hair loss in women. Unfortunately, both hyper and hypothyroidism cause hair loss pretty often.

Now – Synthroid is a drug designed to balance thyroid levels and function. So normally, it should decrease the hair loss. But scientists and previous users noticed that it actually increases hair loss in some cases. So it does have hair loss among its side effects, ironically. Now – in most people, it should really help with the thinning. But in a few cases, it does the opposite – and you’re unlucky to be one of those.

The only thing I can recommend you is to visit your doctor and ask him to change this drug with something else. Your body might react better to other medication – even if it’s the same active ingredient but another brand with different additives.

Since the cause behind your hair loss is medication, there’s nothing else I can recommend you. Taking a supplement might or not help, it depends from person to person. That’s why I don’t think it’s worth the try, until you solve the actual cause. Please keep me updated with this in the future.
